Using Electronic Cigarettes for Smoking Cessation

Electronic cigarettes are a new development used as an alternative to actual cigarettes or other tobacco products. They come in a variety of styles and shapes, from devices that resemble ball-point pins to those that resemble actual cigarettes. The devices simulate smoking by creating a mist that resembles tobacco smoke and often contains nicotine. They can even simulate the flavor of tobacco smoke, regular or menthol, with other flavors (such as vanilla or cherry) also available.

Models that resemble cigarettes may come with a charger that is similar to the size and design of most cigarette packs, the battery run electronic cigarettes can by recharged in the “pack” for reuse. Designs vary widely, from disposable units to a single rechargeable device, but many can be used for the purpose of smoking cessation.

Since the devices contain nicotine smokers can use them as a substitute to real cigarettes, get the desired nicotine content, and avoid many of the health hazards associated with smoking. Many of the devices will allow the smoker to choose their level of nicotine intake from low doses to high and even extra-high. Gradually decreasing the level of nicotine in each electronic cigarettes cartridge (for example, from “High” to “Medium” to “Low” over the course of several weeks to a few months) may prove to be an effective way for many smokers unable or unwilling to quit cold-turkey to gradually wean themselves down to a comfortable level which will make quitting much more bearable.
